  1. Answer:
  2. Shimano Shoes
  3. Nike Shoes
  4. Any Others

Roger has not joined us in the 21st. century and is still using toe-clips and straps on his pedals, his problem is that he wants some shoes for riding and wants some suggestions as to what is available.

Question: I am still using toe clips on a comfort bike. I need a recommendation regarding finding shoes to wear. Thanks.

Answer:

Hi Roger,

You need a pair of sturdy soled shoes preferably with a flat section where the backplate of the pedal will go, soles with a lot of treads can be a bad idea as they can sit at an angle on the pedal which could give you a sore knee, hip or ankle, and at worst a bad back.

So what shoes are available on the market for people with clips and straps:

Shimano Shoes

RP1 Bike Shoes – Men’s

Shimano makes lots of Mountain bike shoes that you can use for either clips and straps or with shoe plates. They come with a rubber cover over where the shoe plate can be fitted, this you can leave in place and ride with your pedals.

  • Shimano MT90 Mountain Bike Shoes.
  • MT40 Men’s and Women’s Shoes.
  • MT31 Mountain Bike Shoes.
  • MT30 Mountain Bike Shoes.
  • MT20 M and D Mountain bike Shoes.
  • MP66 DX Style Shoes.
  • MP56 DX Style Shoes.

Nike Shoes

Women – Nike Acg Cycling Shoe

Nike has quite a few comfortable cycling shoes. Some are for mountain bikes others are for road riding but are designed to be walked in also, Nike are very well made and strong, these are probably the sort of shoes you are looking for, they also make a woman’s spin trainer shoe.

  • Nike Kato III Straps Women’s Mountain Cycling Shoes Anthracite.
  • Granfondo X Walkable Road Men’s Shoes.
  • Nike Granfondo Walkable Road Men’s and Woman’s Shoes.
  • Nike Kato III Lace-up Men’s Mountain Cycling Shoes.
  • Kato Women’s Mountain Cycling Shoes 07.
  • Nike Spin Trainer Plus Women’s Shoes.

Any Others

There are some more, Cannondale make Mountain Shoes that can be used for cycling, the MC range has six different styles and there is the Roam shoe, Diadora makes the Cayman and Cayman also Adidas make the Cyclone Cycling/Spin Shoe, Airwalk manufacture the Sprocket, Urban and the X-Tec. Exustar makes the leather Stelvio which takes SPD shoe plates but can be used without.

All these can be bought on-line, but with shoes, it always better to try them before you buy to make sure you get the right fitting.

If you’re not sure yet about which shoes to go for, over at bikeradar’s forum there is an excellent discussion that will help you with that
