So, you have all the list of the BEST hybrid bikes in the market, and you are ready to buy one. How do you really choose a good hybrid bike?
Decide first on your Bike Frame Materials
There are four types of bike frame materials sold in the market, steel, titanium, carbon fiber, and aluminum alloy. Each type has advantage over another, but depending on your preference and budget we can help you choose the best choice.
Carbon Fiber
The most expensive in this category is carbon fiber. It is a frame material for high-end mountain and road bikes and is being raced at a professional level. The most expensive of all because it is significantly lighter than aluminum, steel or titanium. Carbon frames are also best at absorbing road vibration so you end up having the most comfortable ride you will ever have.
The downside though of carbon fiber, is that they are prone to fracture since carbon is easily breakable, and fragile, and once the carbon breaks, you cannot fix it at any other resort, thus unfit to ride.
Aluminum
The most common of all is the aluminum frame. It is also the most affordable bike frame in the market. Known for being corrosion resistant, lightweight (but not as light as the carbon fiber), and a high strength-to-weight ratio. Bikes are easy to handle, accelerate quickly and deliver quality handling. Aluminum materials are easy to work with and that helps keep the low costs of manufacture.
Although this bike is best for its price, it doesn’t absorb road vibrations. When your priority is comfort for a long, long ride, it is not a prominent option.
Titanium
Titanium is similar to steel but has a greater resistance to corrosion and fatigue. Its build is known for long lasting, lightweight frames. It is also easier to repair than aluminum or carbon fiber. Best for custom road, touring and even hard trail off road.
The downside is that titanium is rare, and expensive bike frame material. It is also labor intensive so bikes are quite pricey.
Steel
Steel is relatively heavier than the other 4 types of bike material. Steel is the first material used in the bike industry, but declined when aluminum and carbon fiber showed up. But this bike is best if you prefer a custom bike without the high price of titanium. Steel is also the most durable and highly resistant to fatigue, so it is best used for road, bike packing, bike touring and even on bumpy terrain.
But steel is prone to rust. So if you live in a coast area, take a little bit more extra care so it won’t corrode.
Look on the suspension and brake system
These two are important to keep your ride safe and secure. Most of the hybrid bikes have a hardtail suspension, or dual suspension, and some don’t have suspensions at all. Keep in mind that the front suspension of a bike reduces the absorption of shock, but if you are more to the city tour and smooth pavements, you may skip this.
For the brake system, it has two mechanisms: Rim brakes and Disc brakes.
Rim brakes are more affordable and most common to road bikes. It provides a strong stopping force and its brake pads are easy and cheap.
Disc brakes have two types: Mechanical and Hydraulic. Mechanical disc brakes require manual adjustment of brake pads. It is economical and smoother to maintain. While the hydraulic disc brakes provide robust stopping force, and best for muddiest off road terrain.
